Alright, so we will give the archbishop the benefit of the doubt on one thing: we too picture Martin Luther as a fat, old, bald guy who wheezed for an hour after posting his “95 Theses” to the door of Castle Church in Wittenburg. Therefore, we can understand his mistake in thinking that Rick Majerus, coach of the Saint Louis University basketball program, might be the next Martin Luther—doing his darnedest to destroy good ole Catholicism. But come on… the Jesuit leadership of Saint Louis University should take “appropriate action” against Majerus because of his views on abortion? Take a look here for the complete article. Now, we usually don’t take time on this blog for encouraging posts, but today is an exception. We would like to tell Rick Majerus’ Saint Louis Billikens to not hang your heads. If you have not heard, the Billikens set a modern NCAA record by scoring only 20 points in a 49-20 loss to George Washington last night. We feel certain Majerus would call that effort “oh-fensive.”
But we want to focus on the positive. No reason for the Billikens to hang their heads - because they played as a team. And here’s the evidence to back it up - Saint Louis only had 7 field goals, but they had 4 assists! That’s right, more than half of their made field goals came as the result of good passing, leading to the high number of assists. Many people would assume that if you only made 7 shots, that your team might only tally about 2 assists - but not you guys.
For comparison, check the box score for the Georgia Southern game last night. GSU racked up 96 points (76 more than SLU), but the team only had 17 assists on 37 made field goals. Sounds like a lot of dribbling to us. Or take Sacramento State - these guys scored 78 (58 more than SLU) points but only managed 11 assists on 27 made field goals. That is nowhere near the teamwork displayed by the Billikens.
So fellas, don’t hang your heads. You guys keep playing as a team, dishing out those assists, and the wins will follow. We remember back last season when the 3rd grade girls team we coached had a tough 28-22 loss (the girls did score 2 more than SLU) - we focused on how they played as a team, since they had 6 assists on 10 made shots. And you know what, we ran up a 4-game winning streak after that tough loss. So don’t let your 20-point output get you down.
We know you guys can do the same.
