Word from ESPN is that John Smoltz is leaning toward signing with the St. Louis Cardinals for the stretch run.  Upon hearing this news, mob scenes of celebration broke out in Chicago and Milwaukee.

“I will give up part of my paycheck to help make this happen,” Prince Fielder told our inside source.

In his 8 starts with Boston, Smoltz did not make it past 6 innings in any game and gave up 5 or more runs in 6 of the 8 starts.  The Hall of Famer’s e.r.a. this season only looks good when compared to that of Chien-Ming Wang.

J. Smoltz (W, 1-0) 5.0 IP; 3 H; 0 R; 9 K; 0.60 WHIP

Hence, the “in vain”.
