In last week’s USA Today coaches poll, Duke received one vote to be ranked.  We think it may have come from former coach Steve Spurrier, who was famous up until this year of always giving Duke one vote in the pre-season poll.  But last week, Duke getting the vote wasn’t as crazy as it might seems.  The Blue Devils were 3-1 with their only loss coming to an undefeated Northwestern team.

But somehow, Duke still got a vote to be ranked this week.  That one we’re not so sure about.  After all, the Blue Devils lost 27-0 to Georgia Tech and only managed to gain 132 of total offense in the game.  Our first thought is that Spurrier was lazy and just turned in the exact game ballot from last week.

But then we realized what coach it had to be that voted for Duke - Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen.  After all Friedgen’s Terps traveled into Charlottesville on Saturday having won 3 in a row, only to get whooped by Virginia 31-0.  Yes, the same Virginia team that Duke beat the previous week 31-3.  We assume then, that in Friedgen’s estimation those Blue Devils must be pretty damn good.  And worthy of his vote for the top 25.

We would guess that Friedgen will give Miami coach Rand Shannon a call this week and tell him to “watch out for Duke” this week in Durham.
