We had some debate here at CIV. Do we take the time to point out all the mistakes made by The Nevada Appeal’s Joe Santoro or not? We’ve already done it once, so is it worth the effort to do it again? Of course it is!
Here’s our problem with Santoro… he clearly does not take the 2 minutes it would take to check his facts before writing his blurbs. He’s not like Mike Freeman, who just writes the cheapest, most ill-conceived stories to get a rise from people. Santoro just plain writes incorrect statements. And we can’t figure out why.
He does not make small errors, like missing a guy’s lifetime batting average by .003. It’s big things, like thinking Memphis University is in the state of Kentucky. Hence, we feel the need to once again call out Mr. Santoro for his obvious blunders.
As always, feel free to check here for the entirety of his Friday opinions. Read the rest of this entry »
This morning on the radio, we thought we were listening to a commercial for a car dealership. You know, one of those where the guy screams about how many extra Capris they received this month and how he has to get them off the lot.
Turns out, it was a college basketball commercial. And for the University of Indiana, no less. After seeing this article, the commercial made a lot more sense. It went something like this…
“This weekend only, all scholarships must go! That’s right, if you’re in the Bloomington area this weekend, come on down for a tryout. If you’ve ever played basketball, cheered for basketball, watched a game, watched someone watch a game, have few class credits or no credits, come on by! Let me put it you simple folks, we got four scholarships too many for next season on account of all the players leaving Indiana, and they must go ASAP! We are handing out scholarships in a fire sale like you’ve never seen. Ever wanted to experience the excitement of Big 10 basketball??? Ever wanted to be a part of a game where the teams combine to score 86 points??? Well now’s your chance, but act fast. We know these scholarships will be gone quickly, so don’t sit there just wishing you could play D-1 basketball - make it happen!”
But what really topped off the commercial for us was the guy who spoke to the fine print really quickly at the end.
“Certain restrictions may apply. You are not eligible if you live in Alaska or Hawaii, or have spoken to, looked at, or received a text message from Kelvin Sampson.”
Please note that today, May 1st, is a special day. Why?
Because, from our research, today is the first day in the history of Todd Boyd’s contributions to ESPN’s Page 2 that he wrote an article that did not play the race card. Really, it’s true.
We were as amazed as everyone else probably was. We did not know he had it in him. We were under the impression that Boyd was fully incapable of writing an article just about sports, or people, without making it a racial issue.
But somehow, today he had an article posted where he just discussed that he thinks the NBA MVP should be chosen after the playoffs. It was an unbelievably rational article, especially coming from Boyd.
So, congrats to you, Boyd. Not only is this the first time you have ever written an article where you do not inexplicably bring race to the forefront; it’s also the first article of yours we have decided not to bash.
