We had some debate here at CIV. Do we take the time to point out all the mistakes made by The Nevada Appeal’s Joe Santoro or not? We’ve already done it once, so is it worth the effort to do it again? Of course it is!

Here’s our problem with Santoro… he clearly does not take the 2 minutes it would take to check his facts before writing his blurbs. He’s not like Mike Freeman, who just writes the cheapest, most ill-conceived stories to get a rise from people. Santoro just plain writes incorrect statements. And we can’t figure out why.

He does not make small errors, like missing a guy’s lifetime batting average by .003. It’s big things, like thinking Memphis University is in the state of Kentucky. Hence, we feel the need to once again call out Mr. Santoro for his obvious blunders.

As always, feel free to check here for the entirety of his Friday opinions.

(1) On John Daly: “The difference between Daly and Clemens is that Daly never tried to hide his world from us. Daly is just an average guy who just happened to have one magical weekend in his life. He is what he is.”

Our comment: We agree in theory here, but come on, Joe. John Daly has won not one, but TWO majors. In addition to those, he has won 3 other PGA Tour events. So, we are of the opinion that Daly has had at least two magical weekends, and easily that number could be five. And there’s nothing average about winning a PGA Tour event, not to mention five of them. Time it took us to confirm the above info on Daly - 32 seconds.

(2) On Mark Cuban: “He’ll fit right in with Cub fans, who expect nothing more than a fun three hours, plenty of cold beer and hot nachos and a cell phone to tell a friend that they are indeed at the game.”

Our comment: What??? So, you’re saying that the Cubs’ fans don’t harp on the fact that they have not won a World Series in 100 years? That’s not a sticking point for them. Cubs fans just want to have a good time at a game. Right, and Duke fans are content losing to UNC as long as they can tell their friends they were at the game. Time it took us to confirm the above info on Cubs fans - 0 seconds.

(3) More on Mark Cuban: “He has already started the demolition by firing Avery Johnson. Here’s hoping Cuban makes like Ted Turner and names himself the head coach.”

Our comment: This statement is accurate, which is why we are amazed. It took us about 5 minutes to find out whether Turner actually coached the Braves (he did for one game in 1977). So how in the hell can Santoro get that obscure fact exactly right - one game in 1977! - but not know that Daly has won two majors or that Memphis is not in Kentucky??? This makes no sense!

That’s all for this week on Santoro. We will spare you our analysis of his analysis of the Roger Clemens saga. However, I think there’s a good chance we’ll be back next week with more commentary on Santoro’s inaccuracies. Don’t you worry.
