We were flipping through the channels last night and happened upon what was apparently a big Arena Football League game, Dallas vs. Philadelphia.  We watched for a few entertaining minutes, but we left the game with one lingering thought…

There is no doubt that by the year 2011, Colt Brennan will be the greatest quarterback the Arena Football League has ever seen.

In addition to having one of your players claim the team “quit” in a playoff game, the other surefire way to tell that your favorite team has collapsed during the playoffs… a news story runs confirming that the coach will be back next year while the playoff series is still in progress.

Exhibit A: Karl’s Job Secure with Nuggets (Denver Post)

Our inside source spoke with college hoops analyst Jay Bilas momentarily last week.  Here’s what went down…

Q: Jay, if you could pick one of these two things which would it be - Duke having won the National Title in 1986 when you were on the team, or having Tyler Hansbrough stay at UNC for his final season so you could call a few more of his games?

Jay (without hesitation): Have Tyler stay and out-compete everyone for one more year in college.

Today, after seeing this news, we imagine that Jay Bilas has a feeling of euphoria deep in his heart.

At least that’s Elizabeth Hurley’s story.

In a London Times interview highlighted in this article, the (quite attractive) “actress” is quoted as saying: “Shooting bikinis is now my life, which, as you can imagine, is unmitigated hell.” Ms. Hurley went on to state: “I can’t think of anything worse in the world than another bikini shoot — and I’ve got two next month. It’s unbearable, and I bring it all on myself. I’ve got nobody else to blame. It’s literally torture. If you get a photographer you don’t know, of course, you think, ‘Oh God.’ But if you signed on for the gig, sadly, you have to go and be jolly in a skimpy white bikini. So I now rely on nice photographers, and a bit of retouching.” (We added the italics for our favorite segment.)

Now, the only question is… where do we start ripping into Liz? Read the rest of this entry »

After reading this quick news report about FSU wide receiver Preston Parker getting arrested on weapon and drug charges, we would like to echo the sentiments of the article’s final paragraph and offer a shout-out to Randy Spetman.

That last line stated: “The 21-year-old’s arrest is the first major discipline problem at the school since the arrival of new athletic director Randy Spetman earlier this year.”

Congrats, Randy!  Wow, a job well done.  After all, you were hired on February 4th of this year.  That means you made it 2 months and 18 days without one of Bobby Bowden’s “players” getting in trouble.  Must be a record!

We can only imagine how wonderful those 2 months and 18 days were for you, Randy.  Going around the office, or the country club, telling everyone: “It’s now been 2 months and 14 days that I’ve had my job and not one of Bowden’s recruits has had a major discipline problem.  La, la, la.  How great I am!”

This is not a knock on Spetman, as he did not write the article.  We just find it humorous that the AP writer chose to mention this piece of info at the end - as if it was something to be impressed by.

A few months back, we all went over to a friend’s house to play the awesome video game, “Guitar Hero.” One of our friends brought her 4 year-old son over for the fun. He wanted to jam but clearly did not understand exactly how to play the game (seeing as he was only 4). Of course, he knew that hitting the buttons on the guitar would make something happen on the screen, but he did not quite follow hitting the right colors at the right times, etc.

So, we gave him a guitar that was not plugged in. He played nearly every song of the night, teaming up with whoever’s turn it was to play… only it was the older person with the guitar actually playing the game. But our friend’s son rocked out nonetheless, and still enjoyed himself immensely. And his “playing” did not make anyone have a lower score than expected. We just wanted to recount that story because we thought it was a clever and cute way to handle what could have been an awkward situation.

On a completely unrelated note, we just read this article about the recently fired Isiah Thomas. Apparently, Thomas has been assigned a new position within the Knicks’ organization as “advisor to the team” - only there’s one catch: he’s banned from having any contact with members of the team as part of his reassignment agreement.

We came across a sportswriter for the Nevada Appeal named Joe Santoro. After a quick scan through his column, we realized one thing. Santoro needs to have his poetic license revoked, or at least suspended. In the one column we looked at, Santoro made no less than three of the most off-base comments we have seen. Seriously, they were Freeman-esque. Read the rest of this entry »

Well, we have been pretty caught up in the NCAA Tournament and have not posted much. But that’s about to change!

So, of course, we heard about Dick Vitale being voted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. You can check that story here. And of course, we know that Billy Packer, another annoucer, is not in the Hall of Fame (and has rarely even been in the discussion). His broadcast partner, Jim Nantz, has often campaigned for Packer to get some hall consideration. But to not avail.

That got us to thinking… why is that? And here’s the analogy here! Billy Packer is the Barry Bonds of college basketball broadcasting. Read the rest of this entry »
