We came across this article earlier today, which contained an awesome quote from former New York Giant Tiki Barber. Of course, Barber is now famous for (a) criticizing and making fun of Eli Manning earlier this season, and (b) retiring the year before the Giants won the big one. Anyway, here’s the quote from Tiki that got our attention:
“I feel great joy for them because I know in a lot of ways I helped a lot of guys on that team,” Barber said. “I know Brandon [Jacobs] was someone who benefited from me being there; even criticizing someone is a way of getting them to think about themselves.”
His comments rang true to us. Then, we thought, what other people might Tiki have led to greatness through his catty criticisms?
—As a young boy, Tiki wrote a letter to Dr. Martin Luther King, suggesting he stop his dreaming because all his friends were laughing at him behind his back and he was no good at inspiring people;
—Tiki in early 1980, told U.S. hockey coach Herb Brooks to forfeit the Olympic game against the Russian team because his squad would only be embarrassed on the ice;
—Spoke very poorly of Bill Gates, claiming that everyone knew something called a “computer” would never serve a function in the real world;
—When Michael Jordan was cut from his high school junior varsity basketball team, Tiki told others how Jordan clearly did not have the drive or determination to be a good hoops player, or any jumping ability whatsoever;
—Leading up to the 1988 World Series, word got around that Tiki had said Dodgers manager Tony Lasorda should be fired if he even allowed Kirk Gibson to dress for Game 1 of the series;
—In 1989, Tiki made fun of David Hasselhoff for singing the song “Looking For Freedom,” stating that there was no way the Berlin Wall would stay down;
—Tiki, through a mutual friend, got word to Tiger Woods that he should not waste his time playing golf, that he did not have the strength for the game, and that it was only a game for white kids;
—In 1996, Tiki was overheard talking about gymnast Kerri Strug, saying she did not have the heart, the ability, or the toughness to be a member of the U.S. Olympic gymnastics team;
—Criticized the New England Patriots organization in 2000 for hiring Bill Belichick, claiming they were headed for a decade of picking in the top 5 of the draft with this guy as their coach;
—Made fun of JJ Abrams and David Lindelof, saying how some dumb show about people stranded on an island after a plane crash would never make it past 3 episodes in ABC.
Anything we missed that Tiki might have had a hand in?
