We know that this is a time of the year when many teenagers out there are deciding where they want to attend college.  Well, if you are afraid of having success after graduation from college, then we’ve found the school for you… Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC.

Why Methodist?  The school’s admission page on its website says it all:

“MU students graduate knowing their subject, knowing themselves and having the confidence to strike out in the world.”

So, if you are concerned about having too much success and would rather “strike out in the world,” then Methodist is your place.  Not to mention, these guys know how to use a sports analogy!

For more info on the school, visit its website: http://www.methodist.edu/Admissions/index.htm

Alright, so we will give the archbishop the benefit of the doubt on one thing: we too picture Martin Luther as a fat, old, bald guy who wheezed for an hour after posting his “95 Theses” to the door of Castle Church in Wittenburg.  Therefore, we can understand his mistake in thinking that Rick Majerus, coach of the Saint Louis University basketball program, might be the next Martin Luther—doing his darnedest to destroy good ole Catholicism.  But come on… the Jesuit leadership of Saint Louis University should take “appropriate action” against Majerus because of his views on abortion?  Take a look here  for the complete article. Just one day after Serena Williams was knocked out of the Australian Open, her sister Venus followed.  Venus fell last night to Ana Ivanovic in straight sets, much like her sister.  But it’s after the loss where things went in different directions.

We highlighted yesterday the comments made by Serena - the same comments she gives after every loss.  And so, we were careful to check the stories today to see if Venus acted the way we expected… a much better sport than her sister.  Read the rest of this entry »

As best we can tell, pretty much every scenario that happens can be compared to either professional wrestling or an episode of “Seinfeld.” With that in mind, we are about to explain to you how the 2007-08 Lakers resemble a pro wrestling storyline.

Right now, L.A. is sitting pretty at 27-12, just 1 game behind Phoenix for first in the Pacific Division. The Lakers have won 12 of their last 14 games, but it was last night’s win versus Denver that really drove home the wrestling analogy for us. Read the rest of this entry »

When we read that Serena Williams had been beaten in the Australian Open yesterday by Jelena Jankovic, we knew that a few things were certain to occur in Serena’s post-match interview.

(1) She would make some sort of excuse for why she lost, then talk about how she was not making excuses.
(2) She would reluctantly give the opponent slight credit for the win, then top that with a comment about how she handed the match to her opponent.
(3) At no point would she straight out admit she was beaten by a better player in that particular match. Read the rest of this entry »

We watched both of the NFL playoff games yesterday, and both turned out to be pretty solid games. But our focus in this post is on San Diego defensive end Luis Castillo. The day before our country honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., here’s what Castillo had to say about his team’s quarterback playing injured:

“Philip Rivers is the most courageous teammate I’ve ever had; the most courageous guy I’ve ever seen. For him to go out there and play, nobody will ever comprehend what that means.”

Based on this comment, we strongly considered creating a Martin Luther King Courage Award and handing it out to Rivers. Now, we’re not here to dog Rivers, as we do think it was a gutsy performance to play injured. But courageous? Really? Read the rest of this entry »

Mark it down, folks.  The week of January 14, 2008, can officially be known as “The Week of the Escape-goat.”  We already detailed the Titans dropping Norm Chow as an escape-goat for their offensive woes.  And now, turns out that the magazine Golfweek is placing all the blame for its awful cover this week on the editor.

Now, we realize the duties of an editor, but we’re not so sure that this guy necessarily deserves to get the boot.  By now, we’re sure you know of the noose put on the cover of Golfweek, a ploy that many are rightly bashing as a cheap attempt at some publicity regarding the comments by analyst Kelly Tilghman.  And yes, the editor does have close to the final say in what gets in the magazine and what doesn’t.  But there is someone above the editor - the company that owns the publication.

This comment by William P. Kupper Jr., president Turnstile Publishing Co. that owns the magazine, struck us as odd.  He said: “We were trying to convey the controversial issues with a strong and provocative graphic image. It is now obvious that the overall reaction to our cover deeply offended many people. For that, we are deeply apologetic.”

He used the word “we.”  That says to us that his company knew what the cover would look like, and decided to go along with that decision.  So basically, they told the editor that the idea was fine to put a noose on the cover, then when that cover did not go over as expected by the people who gave the OK, they get rid of the editor.

Imagine a defensive coordinator suggesting to the head coach that the team blitz on a key 4th down.  Coach agrees that the blitz is the right idea.  The blitz fails and the opponent scores the game-winner.  Then the team fires the defensive coordinator.  Doesn’t seem right, does it?  Well, that’s essentially what happened here.

We agree that the editor should be held accountable for backing what turned out to be a pretty terrible idea.  But so should Kupper or Turnstile Publishing.  If they thought that cover was a bad idea, we feel certain that it would never have appeared this week.  It’s a different story if the parent company did not know what the magazine was planning.  But in this case it appears they did.

And that’s why we’re calling this “The Week of the Escape-goat.”
