We must admit - we were delighted to read this article that West Virginia decided to hire Bill Stewart as the full time head coach. And we give a big pat on the back to athletic director Ed Pastilong for two reasons: (1) hiring the right guy, and (2) not waiting around to make the hire.
Stewart coached his team in the BCS with a fire, not scared to make a mistake. when many, including us, thought WVU would get dominated, Stewart led his team to the opposite result. Why not hire Stewart?
The players seemed to really like him, a huge plus these days. He seems to be telling the truth when he says he wants to remain at WVU as long as they will keep him (unlike a previous coach who made that comment). And their other leading candidate, Central Michigan coach Butch Jones, lost 2 games by 45 points or more and fell to North Dakota State. Stewart was the best guy.
But we would like Ed Pastilong to do one more thing for us: tell out-spoken booster Ken Kendrick where he can stick his money. On a day when everyone was excited that the Mountaineers notched a BCS win and hired the man who led them to victory, here’s what a-hole Kendrick had to say:
“He is so overmatched it’s not even funny. He’s a nice guy and a father figure. But they had a wonderful architect and they hired the painter to build the next house. I want Bill Stewart to win and I want our program to be successful. But I feel bad for our future. I’m very concerned.”
They had a wonderful architect? Oh yeah, you’re the jerk that is standing up for Rich Rodriguez, claiming he does not owe the school any money for a buyout after bolting to Michigan. Well we would tell Kendrick to spend his money in a different state.
It’s fine for a booster to not be happy with the coaching hire made by the school. But to come out the very day of the hire, one day after a BCS win, and say something like “I feel bad for our future”??? What a total ass. No way around it.
You can tell your buddy that, tell your wife, tell the athletic director personally. But don’t get quoted by the press saying that - not if you truly are a supporter of WVU football. Are you also going to call recruits right after Stewart leaves their house and suggest they look somewhere other than Morgantown? You might as well.
So, to Ed Pastilong - great hire with putting your faith in Stewart. What he may lack in intricate strategy it appears he more than makes up for in inspiring his players to play their butts off. And Ken Kendrick, why don’t you use some of your millions and buy some class - jerk.
