After finding out that West Virginia head man Rich Rodriguez had decided to take the head coaching job at Michigan, we decided to take a look back at what was said last season when he considered heading to Alabama. no one jumped on Rodriguez last season for basically extorting money from the Moutaineers. He feigned interest in Bama, then decided to stay in Morgantown once they ponied up more cash. Plain and simple.
Now, Coach Rod heads to Ann Arbor. Upon turning down Alabama last season, here’s what Rodriguez had to say about staying at West Virginia:
“Obviously I’m very excited to stay here and I plan on being here a long time. We’ve done some pretty good things over the last five years or so. We’re not done yet. We’re going to continue to grow.”
Apparently, one year is considered to be a “long time” by Coach Rod. But let’s delve further into Coach Rod’s misunderstanding of lengths of time. We assume that, at the end of a basketball game when the commentator absurdly states that ” 1.3 seconds is an eternity,” Rodriguez turns to his pals and says, “You know, that guy is exactly right.”
Or when asked how fast Pat White can he run the 40 yard dash, he might respond, “Man, it takes him forever to get those 40 yards. “Perhaps after he hooked up with a girl for the first time in high school, he stated of the 30 second encounter, “Yeah, we were going at it for a long time.”
We could go on, but we’ll stop there. Seeing as that paragraph will take you many years to read.
But here’s what we really don’t understand: why the bashing of now Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino, but not Rodriguez? Why did Dan LeBatard spend weeks writing articles calling Nick Saban a liar and a weasel, but he can’t find five minutes to rip on Rodriguez?
In our opinion, it is far worse for a coach to pledge his allegiance to a university then leave than it is for a pro coach to do that. In the pros, you draft a player - he comes to play for you no matter who your coach is. In college, the coach is a major selling point. A high school kid commits to come play at a school because he was influenced by the coach. That coach that said he would be there for “a long time.”
And where is that coach now? Smiling in Ann Arbor. We heard DeAngelo Hall of the Falcons all over the radio last week whining about how Petrino had turned his back on the team by leaving, how hurt he was. What??? Hall was a Faclon in 2006, this season, and will be one next season - no matter who the coach is. But what about the 18 year-old who committed to West Virginia to so he could play for Rodriguez?
Well, that poor guy has the choice of (a) playing for a different coach in Morgantown, or (b) sitting out a year after he transfers to another school. Yeah, that seems fair.
So we will keep searching for articles calling Rodriguez a scumbag and a liar and a weasel and everything in between. they should be out there. If media idiots feel the need to lambaste Saban and Petrino, then they sure as hell should not let Rodriguez off the hook.
We won’t.
