So, you know those blind taste tests that coffee ads sometimes do, or maybe it’s a Coke versus Pepsi set-up.  Well, we’re going to give you a blind taste test for college football.  We’ll give you the facts on two teams without telling you who they each are, then we’ll complain to the best of our abilities at the end.  Sound fun?

– Team A is 2-0 vs. the MAC.  Team B is 2-0 vs. the MAC.
– Team A has played 3 teams with an RPI over 90.  Team B has played 4 teams with an RPI over 90.
– Team A has played 4 teams with an RPI of 50 or lower.  Team B has played 3 teams with an RPI of 50 or lower.
– Team A has played 4 teams with a below .500 record.  Team B has played 4 teams with a below .500 record.
– Team A is 1-0 vs. 1-AA.  Team B is 1-0 vs. 1-AA.
– Team A has a win over an opponent who defeated the 4th ranked BCS team.  Team B has a win over an opponent who defeated the 20th ranked BCS team.  (These are each the best wins by an opponent.)

So who should be ranked no. 1 in the BCS and who should be ranked no. 4?  Of course, Team A is Kansas - the no. 4 team.  And Team B is Ohio State, the no. 1 team right now.

And do you know why?

Because the freakin’ Buckeyes started the season ranked no. 11 by the AP.  Kansas was unranked in the preseason and did not receive one single vote.  Not one.  (That would mean that Kansas got 11 less Top-25 votes than Notre Dame.)  In fact, Kansas was not ranked at all until week 7, where the Jayhawks slid in at no. 20.

You know what - this is total and utter BS.  Do you know why Ohio State was ranked in the preseason at 11?  Because of the name on the jersey.  There is no logical reason why there should be 3 spots separating these two teams.  People want to complain that Kansas has not played a tough schedule, well neither has Ohio State.  But the voters for some reason don’t have a hard time putting them atop the polls.

The best win of any of Ohio State’s opponent is Washington’s win over Boise State in week 2.  The best win of a Kansas opponent is Colorado’s win over Oklahoma.  Hmmm, let’s compare the quality.  It’s pretty obvious, actually.

We’re not saying that Kansas should be ranked no. 2 necessarily, we’re just saying that they cannot be 3 spots different than the Buckeyes.  They can’t.  There is no argument out there that Kansas should not be on an even level with Ohio State.  Other than that whole “name on the jersey” garbage.  Oh, and we’ll throw in the fact that there are far more homers among voters for Ohio State than there are for Kansas (*cough* - Herbstreit - *cough*).

For the record, we will be rooting for Kansas to win out.  They certainly deserve a shot at the title more than a team whose biggest game of the year is against a team who lost to a 1-AA school.
